The next big “bet” of the leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure is its congestion Attica Road and her Kifissos. To this end, all sides are sitting on the same side of the table, with GEK President and Managing Director George Peristeris reporting at the June General Assembly that, in fact, some improvements are being studied. “Internationally the traffic burden is related to the course of GDP. What we can do as concessioners is improvements in the Attica Odos occupation zone, “he said.

The prevailing scenario examined foresees the Creating a new exit on the highway at the height of transformationin an effort to improve traffic to and from the Athens – Thessaloniki Highway.

Today, at the Transfiguration Node, vehicles moving on the closed highway to Elefsina and when they wish to head to Lamia or Piraeus use a common exit, which creates strong congestion, especially at peak hours.

The solution examined provides for the creation of an additional outlet solely towards Piraeus, in order to separate the flow of vehicles and reduce pressure on the existing hub.

Infrastructure

However, as competent sources are clarified, this measure is temporary and aims to relieve the traffic problem to some extent. It is not considered a structural solution for the total congestion of the Attica Road, which requires a longer -term design. In other words, integrated solutions are required, such as the project of expanding Kimi Avenue that relates to the construction of a closed motorway 3.8 km from Kimi Avenue to Attica Road to the Kalyftakis junction.

This project, which has a temporary bidder of the TERNA-Actor consortium, remains “frozen” until the decision of the CoE in which the Municipality of Heraklion has appealed.

On the other hand, the project of the triple junction in Skaramanga is on the orbit of implementation for which the Ministry of Infrastructure is said to have already secured funding. The project, which will mitigate the traffic cargo of West Attica, and in particular the Athens Avenue junction with Schistou Avenue, has a total budget of € 36 million and completion of 36 months.

Traffic management

In any case, as Vassilis Chalkias, CEO of New Attica Road, said in a recent conference, the traffic problem could be addressed if traffic management was carried out through a single management center, as well as new technologies such as telematics, “smart sensors”. It is indicative that during the Olympics, a traffic management system had been created and launched.
