The summer discounts will begin today until the end of August, and the stores can remain optionally open on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

The discount period is indicated for “smart markets” for consumers and the commercial world expects increased purchasing traffic that will rise the overall turnover.

Attractive prices in selected and branded items usually act as a magnet for the purchasing public, which however compares the discount prices offered to e-shops.

As Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vassilis Korkidis has stated to RES-EIA, the commercial world maintains its optimism and puts its hopes for a larger turnover than last year in increased tourist flows during the summer discounts, as well as the summer discounts. “A pious craving for retail this summer is the total turnover of the third quarter, without the branches of vehicles, food and fuel, to move up, surpassing the 7 billion -euro reference bar last year.

What to look out for consumers

The Greek Consumer Workers Association advises consumers:

– Hierarchy their needs and shop on their budget.

– Market research before they reach a specific product.

– Do not be seduced by too high rates of discount.

– Be informed of the policy pursued by each store in the event of a defective product, a guarantee, etc.

Attention to unfair and illegal commercial practices

– Each announcement of a price reduction indicates the earlier price applied by the supplier for a specified period prior to the application of the price reduction. The earlier price means the lowest price applied by the supplier during the 30 -day period prior to the application of the price reduction.

When the product is on the market for less than 30 days, the earlier price means the lowest price the supplier applied for the time when the product is on the market. If the price is gradually reduced during the 60 days, prior to the application of the price reduction, the prior value means the value in force prior to the application of the first by successive price reductions. Example: Initial price on June 10 (no deletions/offers etc.) 150 euros. The actual price offered 120 euros. On 11-7-2024 the price offered is 115 euros, so the discount is (120-115 =) 5 euros. – In addition, it is allowed to indicate a deduction rate.

– The way in which the reduced price is calculated and promoted must be accurate and respond to the truth.

– If a reduced price is given to more than 60 % of all items sold, it should be listed in the store’s showcase and notified in any other commercial communication, the discount rate provided and where there are different discount rates per product categories, the range of ” %” shall be stated … In any other case, it will be stated that the discounts relate to selected species, with reference to the corresponding rate.

– Competent Audit Bodies for the Implementation of the Legislation on Price Reduction and the imposition of sanctions are the Commander of the Ministry of Development’s Intercourse Control Unit, for inspections carried out by the DIEPA Control Services. and the competent body of the Ministry of Development for inspections carried out by the Consumer Protection Directorate.

Instructions for merchants – the way of listing discounts

The Piraeus Shopping Association reminds the shopkeepers the obligation to comply with the provisions of the Code of Conduct (YA 66877/30-8-2024) on how to indicate discounts:

* In each price reduction announcement, the earlier price (reference price) must explicitly indicate, on the basis of which the discount applies.

* The earlier price is the lowest price applied by the trader to each product during the 30 days prior to the first discount (ie before July 14).

Reduction of price discounts may be as follows, always on the condition of indicating the earlier price:

* Percentage (%), e.g. “20% discount”.

* A specific amount, e.g. “10 euro discount”.

* Record of a new (lower) price along with the record of the earlier (higher) price, e.g. “Now 50 euros, 100 euros ago”. The earlier price may also appear deleted.
