The society of Crete has been in turmoil following the government’s announcements to create a permanent closed structure of immigrants in Crete as a measure to deal with increased migratory flows from Libya lately.
Speaking to SKAI 100.3 today, Crete Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis said the local agencies were awaiting the government’s final decisions.
For two and a half years, discussions had begun with the leaderships of the Ministry of Migration to create two structures, to record immigrants and then transferring them to the mainland, said Mr. Arnaoutakis.
For his part, Rethymnon Mayor George Marinakis, speaking to SKAI 100.3, noted that there are currently about 1,000 immigrants on the island and almost so many others have left for the mainland.
He added that there are 179 people in an infrastructure space in Rethymnon and with no prospects for their transportation so far.
Mr Marinakis also stressed that a permanent structure would not be accepted on the island and added that his own proposal is to make three temporary hospitality structures, one in each county.
In addition, yesterday’s congestion of Crete continued, with the transfer of 100 people from the port of Chania to the mainland.
On Sunday, another 200 immigrants from Chania and Rethymnon arrived at the port of Piraeus, while in the rough structures of Heraklion, Chania and Rethymnon, there are about 1,000 at this time.
On Wednesday at the latest, there will be information on when the rest will depart from Chania, Heraklion and Rethymnon.
On Monday at 12 noon, in Heraklion, a meeting of all Mayors of Crete is scheduled to meet at the offices of the Regional Union of Municipalities, during which the Union President will inform them of what was said at the meeting last Friday at the Ministry of Immigration.
