“Turn” of candidates’ preferences to shipping schools, departments where most of them were introduced with their first choice, rising bases for polytechnic and economic schools, consistently high medicals, and this year the phenomenon of the vacancies were present in the public.
What are the preferences of candidates
Of particular interest are the statistics that show what the departments that gathered most of the preferences were, but also what were the departments that were first declared in preference by most candidates.
More specifically, in the first five of the sections that have gathered most of the preferences from the candidates are the Athens and Komotini Law Schools, the Master and Police Schools, as well as the Department of Physical Education Science of the Democritus University of Thrace.
More specifically, the most preferences sections were as follows:
- Policemen: 827 preference statements
- Law – Democritus University of Thrace: 457 preference statements
- School of Merchant Navy Master: 424 preference statements
- Law – National and Kapodistrian University of Athens: 361 Preference Statements
- TEFAA – Democritus University of Thrace: 339 Preference Statements
Attention is also the evidence that shows how many candidates were introduced in part of their 1st selection. Typical examples are the cases of Athens Law (EKPA) and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, where almost all of the entrants of these departments had declared them as the first choice, except for one.
More specifically:
- Master School: 1st Option 395 entrants, in total of 424
- Legal – EKPA: 1st Option 360 Imports, in total 361
- Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering – NTUA: 1st Option 220 entrants, out of 221
- Law – Aristotle University of Thessaloniki: 1st Option 209 entrants, in total 334
- Police Officers: 1st Option of 205 entrants, in total of 827
The top ten are completed by the Schools of Engineering of the Merchant Marine, Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus, the Psychology Departments in Athens and Thessaloniki and the Department of Organizations, Marketing and Tourism of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The first 5 sections
In general, the bases of admission to the Polytechnic and Economic Schools were upward, and the foundations of the Law Schools and Psychology Schools declined. The IT schools presented mixed trends, recording other rise and other decline, while most of them, the bases of the Medical Schools remained unchanged.
In particular, in the 2nd scientific field there was a rise in Polytechnic Schools and a dramatic decline in mathematics and physics departments, while in the 3rd Field, medicine appears to be able to withstand the pressure of the lower scores.
The highest import base for 2025 had this year, as in the previous two years, the School of Architectural Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, with 20,380 points. The top five of the highest entry departments are complemented by two Departments of International and European Studies, one maritime studies and the Medical Medicine of the NCSR.
- More specifically, the sections with the highest introduction bases for 2025 were as follows:
- NTUA architectural engineers in Athens, based on 20,380 points.
- International and European Studies of the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, based on 19,295 points.
- Maritime Studies, University of Piraeus, based on 19,210 points.
- International and European Studies of the University of Piraeus, based on 18,990 points
- Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA), based on 18,775 points.
The phenomenon of vacancies
This year the phenomenon of vacancies in several sections of HEIs, not only the region, but also central cities, also made its appearance. Even schools in large cities with the labor market – such as the School of Engineering, the Tourism Management in Aigaleo, or the Departments of Computer Engineering and IT in Ioannina and Patras – did not cover their number of positions.
As Olympia Heidemenakis, a career and career and scientific associate in the Counseling and Professional Career Laboratory of the NCSR, told RES-EIA, “the vacancies are not exhausted in geographical or low demand”.
Overall, according to data from the Ministry of Education, out of 62,618 positions of HEIs intended for GEL candidates, 10,636 were vacant, ie 16.9%.
Specifically, sections in Athens, Thessaloniki, Aigaleo or Rethymnon show two -digit – and in many cases – three -digit losses and even in objects that could be characterized by anything but “indifferent”. Characteristics, listed:
- In the Department of Tourism Management at the University of West Attica, 282 vacancies were left.
- In the Mathematics of the NCSR, in Athens, 103 positions were left unattended.
- At the AEN School of Engineering, considered a section with absorption and good business earnings, 361 vacancies were left.
- At the Department of Computer Engineering and IT in Ioannina, only 63 were covered by 211 seats.
- In the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in Aigaleo, 60 of the 151 were covered.
“It is not that young people are not interested in new technologies or tourism industry. It is that they see fatigue, low earnings, uncertainty. Even where professional absorption is (theoretically) assured, the daily life of the profession discourages, “she said. Haidmenaki.
The appearance of vacancies in HEIs, according to her, is due to many factors. “It’s not just about the number of admissions, nor exclusively with the curriculum,” he said, “it has to do with the choices of young people themselves. Students today will not just state “something” to get somewhere. If the subject is not inspired, if they do not see meaning, if the curriculum seems outdated, they just go over it. “
In addition, as he noted, import numbers are not in line with demand. “When a section offers 500 seats and half are covered, then maybe – just – they don’t need so much. Or, more likely, the value of this department has not been clearly and sincerely presented to the candidates, “he explained.
Of course, another critical, as he described, is the minimum entry base (EBE). “It was established with the aim of securing a minimum academic level of admissions. However, in practice, it often acts as a “cutter” that punishes horizontal departments and candidates, regardless of whether the universities themselves offer qualitative studies or have professional absorption opportunities. “
The importance of vocational orientation and targeting
According to Mrs. Heidemenaki, of particular importance, is of particular importance, so that students and candidates have proper information about what “successful profession” means in practice for each one. “Many candidates do not have a clear goal due to lack of access to vocational guidance services and/or in -time information on alternative routes through the scientific field they have chosen,” he said.
He added that systematic interconnection of schools with certified career and vocational guidance consultants, with appropriate academic and scientific training.
Early understanding of a student’s “strong” points and the choices that can be based on them can set a clear goal that needs even clearer steps.
For example, Nicolas Skorinis, who, although admitting that the process of choosing what he wanted to follow was complicated, has already distinguished the literary lessons as something he would like to deal with. This year, the score of —20 in ancient times, 20 in Latin, 19.2 exhibition and 17.9 in history – brought him a total of 19,330 points, with which he was entered in the 3rd department of the Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
“It was clear that I had an appeal to these lessons and it was easier for me to cope with what the Pan-Hellenic required,” Nicolas Skorinis told RES-EIA. “I have managed for two years to focus on it, to deprive some things that thank me, such as cinema, theater or literature, and to spend time exclusively on what I had to do to achieve my goal,” he concluded.
