Its area row It was often at the heart of news due to repeated flooding phenomena, with more recent events in 2018 and 2020, which caused serious damage to infrastructure and crops. In the context of the flood protection of the riparian areas and the protection of roads, agricultural land and settlements, the Region of Central Macedonia is proceeding with prevention and risk management projects.

The Thessaloniki Metropolitan Committee has positively approved the Environmental Impact Study for the execution of the Himarro settlement project in Thermi Municipality, taking another step towards implementing an important infrastructure project.

Targeted interventions for the safety of the area

The project, initially licensed at the beginning of the previous decade, is part of a wider planning for the flood protection of Thermi Municipality. The repeated exposure of the area to flooding phenomena makes it a direct priority for the region. As the competent services point out, “the need to settle Anthemunda’s torrent is imperative, as the existing riverbed has severe narrowing, adherence, arbitrary configurations and low hydraulic capacity.” The study includes settlement work in a section of about 2,680 meters long, from the “Arapi Mylos” position to the bridge of the Souroti-Basilian Community Road, as well as interventions in five contributing streams. Particular emphasis is given to the enhancement of the drainage, the stabilization of the riverbed with wire and walls, as well as the upgrading of safety in road crossings. Finally, interventions are limited to technical arrangement projects to minimize the environmental footprint.

New goals and funding through NSRF

The Deputy Regional Governor of Thessaloniki, Costas Yutikas, in his position underlined the importance of the project and noted that the environmental licensing was updated to be mature to join the NSRF Central Macedonia by 2025. At the same time, he pointed out that a study of the section is foreseen from the end of the project to the estuary of the torrent in the Thermaikos Gulf, which is particularly dangerous and requires expropriation. “The aim is to complete the study at least in the last kilometers, where it flows the stream and there are the most dangerous points,” he added.
