Today signed the program contract Between the Region of Crete and seven leading scientific and research institutions, marking the start of the creation of the “Regional Support Mechanism for Crete to adapt to climate change”. Crete Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis stressed that “We have to go from theory to practice to deal with climate change. Not only studies, but also results that can come with the collaboration of everyone »pointing out the importance of action and collectivity.
The new mechanism aspires to function as a node scientific knowledgeapplied actions and educational initiatives, with the aim of reinforcing durability and her sustainable development in Crete. The venture is attended by the Hellenic Mediterranean University (ELMEPA), the Technical University of Crete, the University of Crete, the Technology and Research Foundation (FORTH), the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (ELKETHE), the National Observatory.
Scientific monitoring and flexibility in practice
The operation of the mechanism will be supervised through a Climate Change Observatorywhich will gather, analyze and evaluate data on the evolution of actions, ensuring continuous adaptation where necessary. The importance of the initiative was emphasized in statements by representatives of the scientific community, such as the Rector of ELMEPA Nikos Katsarakis, the President of FORTH Vassilios Charmandaris, the Professor of Chemistry of the University of Crete Maria Kakaniou, the Vice-Rector of Crete ELKETHE and Climate Change Vice -Mayor Yiannis Anastasakis.
The project is funded by the Green fund and is characterized as a standard initiative of the Region of Crete, linking scientific documentation to practical application in the field.
