This summer, two sail With a low ecological footprint, the Bonnie R and the Pelago began a separate maritime trip with the main message of the protection of the Mediterranean seal.

On a route that surpassed the 1,000 nautical miles – a mile for each seal surviving in the Mediterranean – the two boats turned into mobile bridges that join peopleplaces and seas in the common struggle to preserve the rarest of the Earth’s rarest.

This great campaignunder the name of Seal Greece and at the initiative of the Monk Seal Alliance and Optipka, started from Volos on July 7th. Its aim is to cross the Ionian and Aegean, with the support of Aegean Cargo Sailing and to highlight the importance of protecting Mediterranean biodiversity.

On the Bonnie R boat, Captain John with German Biologist Nora from Germany took 23 days at sea, visiting six islands and Preveza. Similarly, Pelago with Captain Luke but also ambassadors Arran and Suzanne – a seaside scientists from England and France – traveled in loud meltemia, approaching eighteen Aegean islands. Mona and the live message of the campaign

In each port, locals and visitors they met Mona, the “seal” of augmented reality (AR), who for two months ‘Swim’ on coasts, informed, had fun young and old and ‘Talk’ in five different languages. At the same time, dozens of children participated in creative activities, such as painting, while the message about the sea was transferred to schools, marinas and squares.

Information and awareness actions

From the cafes of the small ports to the diving centers and Kayak schools, every contact was an opportunity for a meaningful exchange. Shopkeepersboat owners and tourism businesses have received information on ways of protecting marine habitats. At the same time, environmental organizations actively supported the effort by making the project a real celebrationdialogue and collective responsibility for the Mediterranean seal.
