Railway rehabilitation projects in Thessaly are proceeding with an intensive pace and within a timetable, with the completion expected in the summer of 2026.
In particular, according to an announcement by OSE-Sidewalks of Greece, manager of the country’s railway infrastructure, “the rail infrastructure upgrades in Thessaly, which began in April 2025, followed by the disasters caused by Daniel. Completion is expected in the summer of 2026. “
It is a strategic investment that shields the rail network against extreme weather and enhancing its resilience to climate crisis. Projects include enhanced constructions, modern signaling systems, ETCS L1, telephony and electricity, as well as critical interventions that increase capacity on the Athens-Thessaloniki basic axis.
The project, with a total budget of EUR 450 million, is funded by national and European resources and includes the Domokos-Crannon Double Line and the Paleofarsalos-Kalambaka and Larissa-Volos sections.
However, according to the same announcement, the work requires the temporary interruption of traffic in sections of the day during the day, which results in a reduction of routes. OSE-Sidriver Roads is working closely with the Hellenic Train to serve the passenger public, as well as with freight freight transport providers for the best possible planning and minimizing impacts.
