Usually, the creation of an island requires centuries – if not millennia – of the movement of huge tectonic plates.
In Alaska, however, a new island appeared in just four decades.
The land area of the two square miles (about 5 sq km), known as a PROW KNOB, was an earlier part of the Alsek glacier.
However, NASA found that it is now completely surrounded by water, cut off from the ice.
In essence, an image taken by the Landsat 8 satellite in August shows that Prop Knob has lost any contact with the glacier.
According to Nasa Earth Observatory, its conversion to an island probably happened between July 13 and August 6th.
NASA attributes the rapid change to climate change and global warming.
Global warming and growth of greenhouse gases appear to have destabilized the glacier
Scientists have warned that ice melting can cause catastrophic floods.
As glaciers melt, the waters are concentrated in cavities previously occupied by the ice, forming huge lakes. Many of them are held only by fragile natural natural barriers and ice. If they retreat, a wave of water and loads can roll at speeds of 30-100 km/h, destroying everything in its course.
A recent study warns that 10 million people around the world are at risk of devastating floods from melting ice.
