A special cleaning initiative was held today at Thermaic Gulf by volunteers from the Greek Eco Project Environmental Association. Citizens and volunteers, walking in the afternoon on the old beach of Thessaloniki, at the height of the White Pyrgos, participated in an action aimed at recovering metal waste from the seabed, using ropes with strong magnets.
As the President of the Organization, Dawn Metaxas told the Athens/Macedonian News Agency, during the action, five different magnet sizes were distributed to passers -by, “to try to magnetize trash from water”as she said.
Findings included coins, pipes and tools various sizes. Purpose of the event, under the title “Diving Against Plastic Pollution”it was the awareness of citizens about marine pollution and the promotion of the circular economy through the distribution of information leaflets on environmental actions.
Environmental Actions Series in Thessaloniki
This event was the beginning of a wider series of actions organized by the Greek Eco Project Non -Profit Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Thessaloniki. According to Ms. Metaxas, the program includes purposes of streams and small beaches, mainly in the area of Manslawbut also laboratories of circular economy. In the laboratories, the plastics collected from the cleaning will be processed to utility, giving new life to waste.
At the same time, photo exhibitions as well as diving seminarsproviding those who wish it to participate in underwater environmental actions extending throughout Greece.
