Athens Airport is highlighted by the vote of airlines as the world’s leading, for the first time in its history.
At the top of the world was the Athens Airport as part of the “Routes World 2025” (September 24-26), the largest meeting of the airline industry, traditionally recognizing the excellence of airports and the top performance in the development of world airline interconnection.
With the votes of the airlines themselves, the Athens International Airport emerged as the ultimate winner, winning the first place among all airports and “Overal Winner” and, at the same time, dominating the highly competitive airport category over 20 million passengers!
This year’s World Routes conference has gathered more than 2,500 airport and airport professionals, with Athens Airport being recognized as a leading international for air marketing strategy as well as the impressive results of movement and network development in Athens. In 2024, Athens International Airport served 31.9 million passengers, record number and 25% higher than pre -pandemic levels.
The growth continued in 2025, with the move increasing by 6.8% in the eight months compared to 2024, thanks to the opening of many new routes. Among them were the launch of American Airlines to Charlotte, Norse Atlantic Airways to Los Angeles, while new connections to India with Aegean Airlines and Indigo are preparing for 2026.
Ioanna Papadopoulou, Director of Communication & Marketing of Athens International Airport, said:
“We’re really excited about the great double distinction at this year’s Routes World Awards! These awards are a recognition of our hard work and a great reward of dedication, vision, cooperation and team spirit! A very big thank you to the airlines for their vote of confidence in the Athens market! “
By steadily enhancing the interconnectedness of Athens and Greece with the world, Athens Airport confirms with this year’s awards, once again, its leading position on the world map of air transport.
