The company is transformed into a purely electric car manufacturer, with PLUG-IN Hybrids (PHEV) being an important pillar of its growth today, as demonstrated by this milestone.
PHEVs occupied a 23% stake in Volvo Cars’ worldwide sales in the first half of 2025. From 46,000 points in 2019, PHEV sales amounted to over 177,000 units in 2024, driven by the strong demand of the XC60 and XC90 PHEV and the three main sales areas.
The XC60 was the first PHEV in Europe in 2024 and the first premium PHEV sales in the world in the last three years. For 2025, it still leads its class. Both the XC60 and the XC90 were renewed last year, increasing their appeal in major markets such as Sweden, the US and China.
Thanks to its strong demand for its PHEVs, Volvo Cars has the highest share of PHEV on total sales among all traditional premium car manufacturers. In addition, it continues to show new PHEVs, such as the recently launched SUV XC70, being the first plug-in Volvo Cars hybrid with extensive electric autonomy, which exceeds 200 kilometers, according to the CLTC test cycle.
“Volvo Cars is committed to a purely electric future. We will get there at the pace indicated by our customers, “he says Erik Severinson (Eric Severinson), head of the Commercial Manager at Volvo Cars. “Our plug-in hybrid cars are a vital bridge to this future for those customers who are not yet ready to choose a purely electric.”
Volvo Cars internal elements show that its PHEVs are often used as if it were purely electric, especially in urban areas. On average, Plug-in hybrid Volvo drivers use their cars without resorting to the internal combustion engine for about half of the total driving time.
“As we invest and strengthen our presence in the growing category of premium pure electrics, we will also continue to develop and renew our hybrids,” says Erik Severinson. “This offers more time for the development of charging infrastructure, thus facilitating the transition to a purely electric world.”
Volvo Cars has been leading a leading position among the plug-in hybrid manufacturers for over a decade. She presented her first PHEV as early as 2012, when she started having a diesel -powered PHEV version of the V60. For several years later, she was the only world car manufacturer who had a PHEV version for each model of her range.
Today, it offers PHEV versions for five different models, which complement a range of six purely electric models. This balanced portfolio product provides Volvo Cars a strategic advantage, allowing it to provide premium electric cars of every shape and size to its customers worldwide.
