According to an entire city, or by 58,449 people, the country’s population declined further last year, as deaths outweigh for another year of births.

At the same time, weddings are reduced, and the cohabitation considers were also cautious. In contrast, an increase was recorded in divorces.

In particular, according to ELSTAT’s survey of the natural population movement, births in Greece in 2024 amounted to 68,467 births (35,216 boys and 33,251 girls), recording a reduction of 4.2% compared to 2023 which were 71,455 births (36,622 boys and 34). Births do not include dead births, which in 2024 amounted to 454, increased by 5.1% compared to 2023 which was 432.

Deaths amounted to 126,916 the number (64,144 men and 62,772 women), recording a decrease of 0.9% compared to 2023 which were 128,101 deaths (64,900 men and 63.201 women). The deaths under the age of 261, increasing the infant mortality (deaths under the age of 1,000 living) from 3.5 in 2023 to 3.8 in 2024.

Marriages amounted to 36,649 (19,695 religious and 16,954 politicians), down 9.2% compared to 2023, during which 40,351 marriages (21,402 religious and 18,949 politicians) had taken place. The cohabitation consists of 14,486, down 3.9% compared to 2023 which was 15,069. 2024 weddings include 101 marriages between men and 81 between women. Correspondingly, the cohabitation of the same year includes 192 cohabitation between men and 96 between women.

Divorces amounted to 15,532, increasing 2.8% compared to 2023 (15,114 divorces). Regarding the type of divorce, 12,805 consensual (82.4%) and 1,886 divorce (12.1%) were issued in 2024, while for 841 divorces (5.4%) the type of divorce was not reported. 66.4% of divorces issued in 2024 relates to marriages that lasted more than 10 years (10,314 divorces).

The divorce ratio per 100 marriages was 42.4 in 2024, compared to 37.5 in 2023, compared to 33.4 in 2022, from 34.2 in 2021 and against 41.2 in 2020.
