Because technology makes jumps, electric motors are quickly lost in value. The German Technical Audit Association (TÜV) proposes the purchase of a used one. Electric cars are quickly losing their value. For this reason, the used ones are particularly attractive for interested buyers, the German Technical Audit Association (TÜV) estimates. Older models offer “modern technology at comparatively affordable prices,” experts say.

According to TÜV, used electric cars are an “attractive alternative” to new electric models or even used with diesel or gasoline engines. “Models like VW ID.3, Renault Zoe, Hyundai Kona Electric or Tesla Model 3 are now available in many pieces, often as slightly used cars of leases,” the German Union explains. “More and more models are available and prices are falling.”

Tesla Model 3: 18,000 and 20,000 euros

According to Tüv, after three years, electric cars may have been reduced to half or even more. “The new generations of models offer larger batteries, greater autonomy and faster charging times,” said TÜV expert Robin Chalbert.

“This makes older electric vehicles show, within a few years, technologically outdated.” At the same time, the decline in prices for new cars, as well as discounts from traders, compress the value of the used buyers, who “can acquire modern technology at comparatively affordable prices”, notes the TÜV Union. A Tesla Model 3 can now be purchased in Germany even between 18,000 and 20,000 euros.

Attention to battery status

Car experts advise aspiring buyers of a used electric car to pay close attention to the battery condition, as its replacement is expensive. Depending on the model, prices reach up to 20,000 euros. “Battery performance determines the value and suitability of a used electric car for daily use,” says Tüv expert Robin Chalbert.

The German expert recommends checking the rechargeable battery of the vehicle by an independent expert, at a cost, in Germany, between 100 and 200 euros. If battery health is 80% up, “the vehicle is generally suitable for daily use and can be used for many years without problems,” concludes Robin Chalbert.
