The “Richter dance” continues in Thebes – Weak aftershocks throughout the afternoon in the area

by

Seismic vibrations continuein Thebes after the 3.7 magnitude that occurred shortly before 11 in the morning in the area.

According to the automatic solution of the Geodynamic Institute, After the two seismic vibrations of 3.7 and 3.8 Richter that occurred shortly before 3 in the afternoon, there are successive seismic vibrations in the area, but most of them are weak.

With the strongest seismic tremor being recorded at around 5 in the afternoon and estimated at 3.2 Richter with a focal depth of 14.5 km in the epicenter of 4 km East of Thebes, so far there have been earthquakes which fortunately do not exceed 2 Richter with the most recent to have been 19:17 in the afternoon 8 Km. South of Upper Boeotia having a focal depth of 9.3 km.

In any case, the area has been particularly affected by seismic phenomena lately, since since last May, the total number of earthquakes that have been recorded there is estimated at 2,500.

The assessment of Professor Lekkas

The seismic tremors in the area of Thebes have reached 2,500 since last May, when the seismic activity in the area started, as the professor of Geology at the University of Athens and president of OASAP told skai.gr, Efthymios Lekkas. According to him, the biggest vibration was 4.8 Richter, however there is no particular concern in the scientific community. The residents, of course, are worried and “longed” once again earlier today, for the new vibration of 3.7 on the Richter scale. The focal depth of this vibration that took place shortly before 11 in the morning and was felt in Boeotia and in areas of Attica, is estimated at 9.8 km. The epicenter is 6 km from Thebes.

As he said, the activity persists, however does not inspire concern in scientists. The area is known for the cracks, however as the professor assures they are small, “they can not give anything bigger”, while they do not cause damage to the surface.

“It’s natural for people to be worried because of the frequency of the vibrations,” he said.

After the 3.7 Richter scale, seismic vibrations of magnitude 1.7 and 1.8 on the Richter scale followed.
