Amazon breaks record of deforestation alerts in the 1st quarter

by

Deforestation alerts in the Amazon in March this year fell by about 15% compared to the same month in 2021. The first three months of the year, however, set a record in devastation alerts in the recent history of data from Inpe (National Institute for Space Research ), not far from the 1,000 km² of cleared forest.

In the first three months of this year, the Amazon has lost 941.34 km². Before the current year, only 2020 had the first quarter of the year with such destruction, with 796.95 km² of forest felled.

The number is high for the season, months in which the rains in the region tend to overturn deforestation data.

The record is not surprising, considering that the months of January and February of this year were records in the recent history of Deter, starting in 2015/2016.

Deter is an Inpe program with the function of aiding inspection and containment of deforestation, with monitoring of the forest in practically real time. The project is also capable of indicating trends in deforestation.

Electoral years tend to see growth in deforestation, and not just in the Amazon, which makes the scenario problematic considering the high rates of destruction in recent years under the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government, the highest in more than a decade.
