ELSTAT: Deaths in Greece increased by 24% in the first two months of 2022

Increase 5,751 deaths or 24.68% were deaths in the country – including deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic – in the first nine weeks of this year (3/1 / 2022- 6/3/2022) and amounted to 29,050 (14,525 men and equal number of women), while during the corresponding period of 2021 (4/1 / 2021- 7/3/2021) they had risen to 23,299 (11,948 men and 11,351 women).

An increase of 4,762 deaths (19.61%) was recorded compared to the average of the first nine weeks of the six months 2016-2021 (24,288 deaths). The corresponding percentages per year for the period 2016-2021 amount to -6.61% in 2021 compared to 2020 (24,947 deaths), to -1.66% in 2020 compared to 2019 (25,367 deaths), to 12 , 18% in 2019 compared to 2018 (22,613 deaths), to -16.06% in 2018 compared to 2017 (26,940 deaths) and to 19.41% in 2017 compared to 2016 (22,561 deaths).

Also according to ELSTATthe highest percentage increases were recorded in the 5th week (31/01 / 2022- 6/2/2022), the 4th (24/01 / 2022- 30/1/2022) and the 2nd week (10/01 / 2022- 16 / 1/2022), with growth rates of 42.5%, 40.2% and 35.1%, respectively.

By age group, it is observed that the deaths were more, in absolute terms, mainly in the age groups over 90 years (1,612 deaths), 85 to 89 years (1,534), 75 to 79 years (751) and 80 to 84 years (638 ), while the lowest were recorded in the age group 0 to 4 years (17 deaths).

According to the Region of permanent residence of the deceased, it is observed that the deaths show an increase in all 13 Regions of the country. The largest increase, in absolute terms, is in the Regions of Attica, Central Macedonia and Western Greece by 1,774, 1,003 and 609 deaths, respectively.
