99%, the virus that causes it acute hepatitis in children is already in Greece, estimates Gikas Majorkinis, professor at the Department of Healthy Epidemiology, EKPA Medical School.
However, the professor reassured that based on what we know so far, it is not something particularly worrying.
“Theoretically, we estimate that if it happens in Greece, it will be of the order of 10-20 cases, in the worst case, if the cases do not increase in the United Kingdom as well,” he stressed, speaking to ERT.
What is acute hepatitis in children?
As Mr. Majorkinis explains, this is one inflammation of the liver which is usually characterized by yellowing. Usually the white of the eye turns yellow, the child has a high fever and this is a bell that the child has to go to the hospital for examinations.
He added that it is a very widespread virus, to which some children probably have a genetic susceptibility and react in this way. This is a rare complication of a very common virus. We are talking about adenovirus 41, probably, which has been isolated in 77% of children who have been tested for it, without meaning that 23% did not have it, they just did not detect it.
Mr. Majorkinis also said that as far as he knows, liver transplants in children are not performed in Greece, and such cases went abroad, because they are rare cases and this specialty does not exist in Greece. Usually in children they are made by a living donor, which means that the father, if compatible, gives part of his liver to the child.
As for the symptoms, he stressed that a fever does not need to worry parents, the main symptom is yellowing of the skin and yellowing of the eye.
