It is noted that a 10-year sentence, without mitigation, was imposed by the Mixed Jury Court of Appeal of Athens on the jeweler and the broker who were convicted for death of Jacques Costopoulos.
Regarding the assessment of their sentence, the owner of the jewelry store will serve a sentence at home due to the fact that he is 77 years old, while the broker will be taken to prison.
Prosecutor Sot. Bougioukos asked not to grant suspension to the accused, but to begin serving their sentence. However, he suggested for the jeweler to serve his sentence at home due to his age, as he is 77 years old.
Defense attorneys asked the court not to “succumb to public pressure” and to suspend the sentence. The trial ended in a tense atmosphere, as the members of the court several times reacted to a comment of the defense, causing small tensions in the courtroom.
The court unanimously ruled that they should not be given any relief.
Earlier, the convicts’ lawyers asked for the mitigation of the legal life kiosk, the non-humble causes and the subsequent good behavior after the operation.
Prosecutor Sot. Bougioukos suggested that no mitigation should be granted to the two convicts. As he claimed during his speech, both the jeweler and the broker in their apologies did not show any remorse, on the contrary they seemed to have not realized the criminal value of their act. “Their behavior and actions involve elements of a punitive disposition,” he told the court, adding: “Zacharias Costopoulos never attacked the accused since he was trapped and they were safe. It turned out that they attacked him.
