Although important steps have been taken in terms of informing and engaging women in the field of technology, the percentages of both women working in the industry and those in high positions are low. Indicatively, women cover only 25% of the jobswhile only the 3% of them are in positions of responsibility and leadership.
This conclusion emerged in the first two online events of the “Women in Tech Greece” initiative organized by the National Network of Technology and Research Infrastructures (EDYTE SA – GRNET SA), a body of the Ministry of Digital Government, in the framework of the “Women in Tech Greece” initiative “, Aimed at informing and sensitizing women about the opportunities and challenges related to careers in the field of technology.
In fact, what was pointed out is that if the equal participation of women in technology is not strengthened, the rapid growth but also the creation of new jobs created by the evolution of technology will contribute to the further widening of the digital gender gap.
The main axes of actions and proposals discussed at these events with the aim of developing digital skills and the overall encouragement of women for their involvement and development in the field of technology, were the following:
- The promotion of positive female role models distinguished in technologies through interconnection networks, support and mentoring actions, aiming at the empowerment of girls and young women.
- Education and the development of digital skills from the first school years and throughout the formal and non-formal education with the aim of eliminating gender stereotypes.
- The lifelong education of women with the aim of their continuous training and professional development.
- The development of synergies between the State, the labor market and civil society for joint initiatives and actions aimed at informing and raising awareness about equal access to the professions in the field of Technology and taking positions of responsibility.
It should be noted that the two events were attended by the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, in charge of Demographic Policy and Family, Maria Syregela, the Secretary General of Digital Governance and Simplification of Procedures, Leonidas Christopoulos, the President of EDITE, Mr. Demographic and Family Policy and Gender Equality, Kalypso Goula. The two events were coordinated by the co-founder of Women On Top and author, Ms. Stella Kasdagli.
