by

The Rethymnon hospital is on high alert after occurrence of Candida Auris in 70 year patient. As he told ERT Chania the ICU director of the hospital Charalambos MarkakisAs soon as the strain was identified after culture, there was great concern, however, the next day when the antibiogram came out, the doctors found that the fungus Candida auris was not very resistant, but had sensitivities to several antifungal drugs.

A specific treatment was immediately given to the patient, who was then sterilized and now his health is developing without problems.. In fact, Mr. Markakis explained to ERT that there are other strains that are resistant and these are very difficult to treat, without excluding in the future the fungus candida auris to appear as resistant, something that now with the recession of the pandemic does not see it very likely . In fact, he said that after the appearance of Candida auris, nothing has changed in the hospital of Rethymno and the sterilization and prevention actions in the ICU that were done before continue to be followed.

At the same time in Chania hospital all protocols are strictly followed, while extensive sampling is performed on ICU surfaces and additional cultures have been performed on surfaces, without anything worrying being identified. As the deputy commander of the Chania “Agios Georgios” hospital, Manos Bolotis, told ERT, there is a close monitoring by the infection committee, which is in constant contact with the health services and the quality assurance organization in health.
