The extension of Metro Line 2 to Ilion is expected to be auctioned by the end of 2022, while at the end of the summer the Metro will reach Piraeus with the expansion of Line 3, as announced by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, George Karagiannis, in an interview with the television station ANT1.

According to Mr. Karagiannis, “Infrastructure projects mean new jobs and citizens’ trust in the State”, emphasizing that “from the large plan of projects that we implement, 200,000 new direct and indirect jobs are expected to be created”.

“This government is auctioning, but also delivering new Metro stations, improving the lives of citizens,” said Mr. Karagiannis, noting that “the Tram to Piraeus has already been delivered, while at the end of the summer all three stations of the extension will be put into operation.” of the Metro, “Maniatika”, “Piraeus” and “Municipal Theater”. Thus, the journey from Piraeus to the Airport will be done in 50 minutes “.

In fact, Mr. Karagiannis announced that by the end of the year it will be auctioned the extension of line 2 of the Metro to Ilion with three new stations, “Palatiani”, “Ilion” and “Ag. Nicholas“And” the resident of Western Athens will be able to go to the center in 20 minutes “.

The Undersecretary of Infrastructure made special mention of Line 4 of the Metro, “the largest transport infrastructure project currently under construction in Europe” which will result in “transportation to quite congested areas of Athens to be done within 15 to 20 minutes.”

He stressed that in the near future there will be announcements in relation to the next road projects planned for Attica and which will meet the increased requirements for fast travel.

Already, as he commented, “we have resolved a backlog of decades as we matured, we auctioned and by the end of the year the works for the expansion of L. Kimi and its connection with PATHE begin”.

Thessaloniki Metro: Delivered complete and operational at the end of 2023

In terms of Thessaloniki Metrothe Undersecretary of Infrastructure admitted that this is a sensitive point and assured that “we will deliver it complete and operational by the end of 2023”.

In fact, Mr. Karagiannis stressed that the metro is not the only significant intervention in Thessaloniki, as the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is also intervening on the ring road.

He stressed that FlyOver was designed, matured and auctioned by the government and now by the end of 2022 construction sites will have been set up.

Our intervention prevented disruption in the construction area

Regarding the construction sector in general and the progress of the projects under the weight of large price increases in raw materials, Mr. Karagiannis stressed that the successive crises and the war in Ukraine led to very high price increases of raw materials.

As he said “we are intervening seriously and that is why you do not see any disturbance in the construction site. “Projects have not stopped because of the very high price increases.”

He explained regarding the intervention of the Ministry of Infrastructure, that “three materials – asphalt, plastics and polyethylene – will be paid at the current price so that no work is stopped. At the same time, we will give a 6-month extension to all the projects, but at the same time we will give a 5% acceleration premium, so that all those who do not use this extension, will be paid extra by the State to continue the projects “.

“We proceeded with price and rate revisions for the Fourth quarter of ’21, as well as a major reform, establishing the Price Observatory to monitor the prices of materials at all times,” he added.

Projects in many different areas, across the country

Mr. Karagiannis pointed out that “in just 2.5 years we have auctioned projects worth 8 billion euros and today we have dozens of construction sites, not individually, but in many different areas across the country.”

Indicatively, he stated: “Our fellow citizens from Crete, who listened to BOAK and did not watch BOAK for decades and now we already have temporary contractors in the tenders and in 2022 we will have construction sites. The resident of Western Greece, who was literally trembling to cross the Patras-Pyrgos road, and now sees the first construction sites on both the new axis and the old one “.

“And many others, in all parts of Greece, now understand and see that someone really cares and respects them and does specific actions to improve their lives,” he added.

“The Prime Minister’s trip to the USA is a national success”

The Undersecretary of Infrastructure also referred to the recent trip of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the United States, describing it as a “national success”.

Regarding the government’s handling of citizens’ support, he referred to the continuous and permanent reductions in taxes and insurance contributions.

“We have reduced ENFIA, insurance contributions and increased the minimum wage, so let them not talk about tax cuts in this government,” said Mr. Karagiannis.

“In the face of an unprecedented international health, economic and energy crisis that is affecting economies and societies around the world, we are actively supporting citizens,” he said.
