Constantine and Helen: Great Feast of Orthodoxy today

by

Today is a great holiday for Orthodoxy. On May 21, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Emperor Constantine I the Great and his mother Helen. He calls them Apostles for the great services they offered to Christianity.

Constantine the Great (272-337): Agios Konstantinos’s parents were Constantius I Chloros and his mother Eleni from Drepano of Bithynia. He reigned from 306 until his death. With his decree on secularism he put an end to the persecutions against the Christians.

Saint Helen: Between the years 272 – 288 she gave birth to Constantine in Naisos of Moisia. Constantine the Great especially honored his mother. He awarded her the title of Augustus, put her form on coins and gave her name to a city of Bithynia.

Our church honors their memory today, May 21st
