Economou: We ship to Ukraine obsolete armor – Will be replaced by modern

by

The decision to send them to Ukraine obsolete armor is part of the country’s position for substantial support of Ukraine, said the government Giannis Oikonomou speaking on SKAI television. He noted that the decision is in line with both the decision of KYSEA and what all states do.

He noted that everything that is not necessary for the Greek armed forces is sent to Ukraine and we replace everything that is obsolete, with more modern weapons.

These, as he said, are armored personnel carriers, which Greece received in 1992 and are essentially inactive and Germany will replace them with more modern ones.

“First the most modern ones will come and then the old ones will leave” he said characteristically and added that “not only will we not miss them, but we will also get more modern ones”.

Responding to the opposition criticism that this became known in Greece from the Soltz interview, the government spokesman stressed that the agreement was closed after consultation between the Greek and German staff and wondered: “Is it possible to keep these things secret?”.

“When the new ones would come and the old ones would leave, the announcement would be made,” he added.

Giannis Oikonomou clarified that this agreement will cost absolutely nothing in Greece and that the details will be announced by the Ministry of Defense within the next one and a half months.

For Turkey, he noted that the position of the Prime Minister is absolute that there can be no equal distances between Greece and Turkey and this was stated both in the US and its partners and in yesterday’s meeting with the German Chancellor.

“It is impossible for Germany not to understand the context in which Turkey is moving and the threats against our country,” he said.

He noted that the country will face the Turkish escalation of tension with confidence, because we are right, we have strong alliances and agreements and we have strengthened the deterrent capacity of the country.

He added that we must be ready for all the data. “We are deconstructing all the lionesses and irrationality of Turkey, the country’s reflexes are always activated,” he said.

He clarified, however, that the feeling should not be given that we are in a state of red alert, but that Greece is a safe country and a factor of stability in the region.

To be precise, he said that the causes are exogenous, that the problem is facing the whole planet, and the government has a plan. Regarding the increase in fuel prices, he said that the government is monitoring the issue, but “we are also obliged to monitor the limits of fiscal strength”.

Regarding the elections, he said that the government is not consumed with tactics and that elections will be held in 2023.
