It is recalled that Ambassador Tsounis is Greek-American, son of immigrants in the United States, originally from Platanos in mountainous Nafpaktia.

Growing up, his parents instilled in him the Greek virtues of kindness, love and, above all, philotimos. He learned Greek as his first language. Deeply attached to the Greek-American community, Ambassador Tsounis was a founding member of the Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC) and, among other roles, is the administrator of the Hellenic Initiative.

Prior to his candidacy, Ambassador Tsounis was the founder, president and CEO of Chartwell Hotels, LLC. He was president of the Battery Park City Authority.

He was also the manager of the New York City Convention Development Corporation and the New York City Convention Operating Corporation and helped manage the expansion of the New York Convention Center by about 140 acres, making it one of the most modern and beautiful convention centers in the world.

At the same time, he served as president of the Nassau University Medical Center, a large public hospital focused on caring for vulnerable communities.

He has also been a consultant and associate (lawyer) at Rivkin Radler LLP, Uniondale, NY, and a New York City Attorney. He has served as an advisor to Dix Hills Water in New York and to the Huntington Outdoor Commission in New York City.

The new US Ambassador to Greece holds an undergraduate degree from New York University, as well as a law degree from St. John’s University of Law. He was head of the Ecumenical Patriarchate (Order of St. Andrew), the highest ecclesiastical honor bestowed on an ordinary citizen by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and has received numerous awards, including the Humanitarian Award for the Human Island B Prize and the Harry Chap Long Chap Achievement for public participation awarded to him by Long Island Business News.

He is married and has three children.
