Enhancing border protection and a solidarity mechanism by all countries, so that the host countries, and in particular Greece, Italy and Spain, do not bear the full burden, decided the EU Council of Interior Ministers
An agreement on the solidarity mechanism for the relocation of migrants and regulations on strengthening EU border controls (screening and Eurodac data) was reached today in EU Home Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg.
French Interior Minister and President-in-Office of the Council Gerard Darmanin spoke of a “historic agreement” which is an important step towards the adoption of the Asylum and Immigration Pact. As announced on twitter, the French Minister of Interior, the two regulations to strengthen EU border protection and for the solidarity mechanism which will help the Member States which are under great migratory pressure, received the support of the vast majority of the Member States. Mr Darmanin also announced that in the coming days the French Presidency of the EU and the European Commission would hold a meeting on the “solidarity platform” to give concrete substance to this historic agreement.
Earlier, attending the EU Council of Interior Ministers in Luxembourg, Gerard Darmanin, explained that the solidarity mechanism provides for the compulsory solidarity of all Member States to countries under pressure from migrants, either by welcoming migrants rescued in the Mediterranean on a voluntary basis or by providing financial and humanitarian support. “The vast majority of member states are in favor of this solidarity and more than ten member states have said they are positive about accepting migrants,” Darmamin said. On the other hand, he explained that the agreement on the regulation establishing control over the screening of third-country nationals at the border (screening), as well as Eurodac data, will help to register migrants at the EU border and deny entry if they are found to threaten the security of the European continent.
End, the Vice President of the Commission, Margaritis Schoinas In a post on twitter, he states that today’s agreement is an indisputable sign of the unity of Europe that has been developing in recent months. M. Schoinas especially thanked the countries of the MED5 group (Cyprus, Greece, Spain, Italy, Malta) for their “constructive approach”.
