How it was chosen how long it will stay. Evangelia Nikas is the new President and CoE.
By Ioanna Mandrou
In a difficult situation with the possibility of holding double elections, the government decided, as the constitution stipulates, to select as the new Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, the experienced public prosecutor Isidoros Dogiakou.
His choice was made by the cabinet following a relevant proposal by the responsible Minister of Justice, Constantinos Tsiaras, based on meritocracy criteria, in the sense that the top positions in the judicial hierarchy must be occupied by competent judges.
Isidoros Dogiakos, who still has only one year left in his term as the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, is one of the most prominent prosecutors with known abilities and prestige.
He has held key positions in the judicial hierarchy for many years, while at times in his multi-year judicial journey of around 40 years, he has handled numerous cases with important parameters.
But the crowning glory of his legal career was his historic proposal to refer Golden Dawn to trial as a criminal organization, with heavy documentation and detailed reasoning, so that the court tried and condemned Doiakou’s proposal by vehicle.
He found himself in a flurry of prosecutions, when in 2015 the then President of the Supreme Court, Vassiliki Thanou, questioned his election to the critical position of Head of the Appeals Prosecution and he clashed with Mrs. Thanou, resulting in disciplinary proceedings and legal involvements from which, as expected, he was acquitted.
The choice of Isidoros Dogiakos was a consequence of the retirement of Vasilios Pliotas, Prosecutor who remained at the helm of the prosecution authority for three years, giving prestige to the Prosecutor’s Office.
Mr. Pliotas handled with objectivity, competence and foresight a series of serious issues that arose from time to time with the view that justice must act wisely and with criteria of legitimacy.
Evangelia Nika for CoE
Besides Isidoros Dogiakos,
the government proceeded to select a new President President of the Council of State, a position of the most important in the leadership of justice.
Before her election as President, Evangelia Nika was vice-president of the Council of State, distinguished for her legal training, prudence and her ability to be accepted by her colleagues and is going to remain as head of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers for two years .
Mrs. Nika was chosen following the departure last Thursday, due to the retirement of the President of the Court Dimitrios Skalzounis, who served seriously and successfully the presidency of the supreme court for one year.
The government’s choices for top positions in the judicial hierarchy will be completed with the selection of new vice-presidents in supreme courts, while the President of the Court of Auditors, Ioannis Sarmas, remains in his position as he retires in 2023.
