Oikonomou: Tsipras much milder sentences for incidents of gender-based violence and murder of women

by

Under Tsipras, the sentences for incidents of gender-based violence and the murder of women were much milder, said government spokesman Giannis Oikonomou in response to the SYRIZA president. He talks about the acting attitude of Alexis Tsipras.

“The painful reality is that we have had incidents of sexual violence and murders of women in the past and unfortunately we still have them today. Only during Mr. Tsipras’ time as prime minister did his government legislate a much milder system of punishments for these crimes. Today, homicide in Greece is punishable exclusively by life imprisonment. This is due to the recent change in the penal code. “SYRIZA voted against this change, a fact that proves the hypocrisy of Mr. Tsipras in this issue as well”, the government spokesman characteristically emphasizes.

In addition, he adds, with a number of institutional initiatives, our government was the one that broke the chronic abscess of gender-based violence and abusive behavior.

“We are actively supporting the victims and we are fighting hard to eradicate it. “In the face of crime, dignity, physical integrity and ultimately human life are protected by strict and functional laws that apply to everything,” the government spokesman concluded.
