The president of PASOK-KINAL reminds in his message that “we are in a world where democracy is constantly retreating”
July 24, 1974 marks the end of the Dictatorship and the “cachetic” post-civil state. The rise of the Post-colonialism gave substantial content to the dreams and democratic struggles of many generations, from 1-1-4 to the Polytechnic, for freedom, independence and social justice”, notes the president in his message for the 48th anniversary of the restoration of the Republic of PASOK-KINAL, Nikos Androulakis.
He points out that “it took many efforts and very important political changes to complete the deepening of the Democracy. Many of the wounds of the dark period have been healed, with the great exception of the national tragedy of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, which remains open to remind us of the tragic consequences of the hospitality junta. Postcolonialism was the longest period of stability, progress and prosperity” and he adds: “In the 48 years since the restoration of the democratic state, if we have been taught anything, both nationally and globally, it is that Democracy, no matter how given considered, requires constant vigilance. We saw how from the strong Greece of Cyprus’s accession to the EU we were led to the brink of bankruptcy due to tragic political choices».
Mr. Androulakis in his message reminds that “we are in a world where democracy is constantly in decline. In 2021, only 13% of people on the planet lived in countries with democratic governments, while ten years ago the corresponding figure was 42%. But even the quality of democracy is threatened by the explosion of social inequalities, the crisis of institutions and the rise of leaders like Donald Trump in very powerful countries of the world. These new conditions show how critical the challenges of the future are for politics».
And he concludes:Today, Greece and Europe need bold changes. Progressive policies are needed that will strengthen the welfare state, citizens’ income and the rule of law. Courageous political decisions that will give convincing answers, in a fair and effective way, to critical issues such as the fight against inequalities and the climate crisis. Only in this way will we manage to build a new relationship of trust between citizens and politics and forge a future of peace, security, justice».
