Mr. Kikilias underlined that, based on the strategy and the plan being implemented, the question is not the number of travelers, but the revenue that tourism will bring this year to the country’s economy and to the average Greek family.

“In the second half of 2022, it is estimated that they will have arrived by air in Athens 5.7 million travelers» announced the Minister of Tourism Vassilis Kikilias on his show “The Mismatches” and to the journalists Yiannis Dsounos and Christos Koutras, adding that the record month will be September.

Mr. Kikilias underlined, however, that based on the strategy and the plan being implemented, the question is not the number of travelers, but the income that tourism will bring this year to the country’s economy and to the average Greek family, as well as the diffusion of the tourism product, so as to strengthen local communities in as many areas as possible, which, although they have a less strong brand, are of equal beauty to other popular destinations.

“These goals, according to the data so far, seem to be achieved, as well as the extension of the tourist season,” said the Minister of Tourism, estimating that this year’s season will last until December ’22.

In terms of infrastructure, he stated that they have already started to be upgraded and the Ministry of Tourism has made a specific recommendation for the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee, so that 35-50 major projects and interventions that intersect with tourism can proceed with fast track procedures. such as ports and marinas, solid waste, water resources and traffic management.

“Since tourism constitutes 25% of the GDP and is the main source of income for the Greek economy, I believe that the Greek Government should invest fast track in these basic upgrades of the country’s infrastructure, so that next year start with a new tourism model of sustainable tourism development, friendly to the environment. You see what is happening all over the planet with fires, natural phenomena and disasters. We next year will come forward, bringing a new product based on the blue and green economy. This will be our brand for the next year, the private sector, Marketing Greece, SETE, XEE, POX, all private individuals who invest in tourism, the public, EOT, the Ministry of Tourism, the entire Government . Our targeting and commitment is on this, so that we can again be pioneers in tourism with a completely new concept” said Mr. Kikilias, emphasizing that the resources from the Recovery & Resilience Fund and the new NSRF are a huge opportunity for the tourist investments which should be exploited in the best possible way.
