Continued challenges from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu which accused Greece and the Greek Cypriots of attempting to send nine ships to the Turkish continental shelf. As reported by SKAI’s correspondent in Turkey, Manolis Kostidis, the Turkish diplomat reiterated that tomorrow the Turkish drilling rig Abdul Hamid Khan will sail for its first operations in the Mediterranean.
“An important factor in our policy in the Eastern Mediterranean is our sovereign rights. The duo of Greece and Greek Cypriots attempted to send 9 ships to our continental shelf. We prevented these with the measures we took both on the front and on the table and tomorrow the ship Abdul Hamit will sail for its first tasks in the Mediterranean”he pointed out.
“Holistic solution to the interconnected problems in the Aegean”
Cavusoglu spoke of a holistic approach to interrelated problems in the Aegean and claimed that Ankara wishes to solve them comprehensively and permanently, but Greece “cannot form the will” to solve them.
“In the Aegean, we want the interconnected problems to be dealt with holistically and to be solved comprehensively, permanently and in accordance with international law. However, Greece cannot muster the will to solve the problems. He who has a habit does not abandon it.. We have told and explained to our interlocutors, especially the UN, that the islands that are close to our coasts, and have a demilitarized status according to international treaties, are now militarized.. We will continue to deal with this issue, which is of critical importance for the security of our country”, write down.
Arrows but also warnings from Cavusoglu in Brussels
At the same time, Cavusoglu aimed his arrows at the European Union, saying that it is not right in the name of solidarity to become a hostage and surrender to the “sterile interests” of its members against Turkey.
“It is not right for the EU to be a hostage and surrender to the sterile interests of some of its members in the light of solidarity and for this to be done against Turkey, which is a candidate for EU membership and a member of NATO”, “relations EU-Turkey are so strategic that they cannot be reduced to the self-interested levels and narrow-minded positions of one or two EU members”.
He even warned Brussels that it needs Turkey for its security, saying: “Safety is like breathing. You understand its value when you miss it. That is why the security of Europe needs Turkey. And Turkey has the obligation to contribute to the security of the continent in which it is located. Because Turkey is Europe. As a European power, in Europe’s difficult moment we give weight again to Europe”.
