The political debate on the case of monitoring of Nikos Androulakis by the EYP, but also of the attempt to monitor him through the illegal predator software, with the parties taking battle positions. A battle that is expected to culminate by the end of the week with the pre-scheduled discussion of the political leaders.

The main object of the Conference of the Presidents of the Parliament is the planning of the meeting of the Plenary for the discussion of political leadersbut also its convocation Institutions and Transparency Committeeregarding the essence of the surveillance case and the hearing by the members of the committee of the new EYP commander, Themistocles Demiris, who succeeded the one who resigned after the revelations, Panagiotis Kontoleontas.

Also pending – due to a closed Parliament – is the request that the PASOK-KINAL MPs are expected to submit, certainly and initially, if possible today, for the establishment of an inquiry committee that will investigate all the questions that arise and must be answered regarding the “unconstitutional attachments” as they refer. Predator malware will also be targeted, as well as “supercontractors allegedly used by the National Intelligence Service”, as they note.

The government’s attitude

As already publicly committed, the governing majority is expected to support the proposal for establishment of an examination committee on the surveillance case, with the possibility of filing its own motion to extend the investigation time from 2012 until today to remain open.

However, the strategy drawn up by the government faction from the first moment of the revelations does not seem to change and unfolds in three axes.

Firstly, that he did not know the slightest about the monitoring of Nikos Androulakis, which he certainly does not approve of and as soon as he was informed of the facts he proceeded to immediately assign responsibility by “removing” both the commander of the EYP Panagiotis Kontoleon and the close associate and c.c. . of Prime Minister Grigoris Dimitriadis.

Secondlythat his government has nothing to do with illegal surveillance systems like predator.

And thirdwill defend the national role and the critical mission carried out by the EYP in a critical period of international developments, which, among other things, pose threats to the national interests of our country.

In fact, the prime minister is expected to invite the other political leaders to frame the dialogue for reforming the service’s operating regime.

Harilaou Trikoupi’s strategy

Having a “leading role”, Nikos Androulakis had a series of meetings with his colleagues, in order to draw up the strategy that his party will follow. As far as the discussion of the political leaders is concerned, however, the PASOK- KINAL gives less weight given that Nikos Androulakis, who is not a Member of Parliament, will not be able to attend the Parliament session. As a result of this fact, Harilaou Trikoupis executives speak of a “shadow theater and Mitsotakis-Tsipras communication show” and argue that “the point is to find the truth. And it will be found in the Institutions and Transparency Committee”.

Speaking on SKAI television, Mr press representative of PASOK-KINAL Dimitris Manzos, explained why his party insists on the Institutions and Transparency Committee “because it is the only body that supervises the EYP parliamentaryly, controls it and guarantees its democratic functioning. We want the former and current administration of the EYP, the ADAE and the co-competent ministers to come to the Committee and say this time and the government and the EYP the whole truth to our MPs and by extension to all citizens”, he pointed out.

At the same time, Mr. Manzos reiterated the two critical questions that are raised on the issue and must be answered institutionally: “First, what exactly is happening with the admitted monitoring of the EYP and who and why considered Nikos Androulakis a “spy” to the detriment of the country. And, secondly, what exactly has happened with the Predator? It turns out that someone – if not who – tried to trap the mobile phone of Nikos Androulakis by diabolical coincidence at the exact same time that the monitoring by the EYP has been started and has been extended”.

However, a question remains as to the period of time that will be investigated by the commission of inquiry, which is expected to be set up, for the surveillance case, after the government’s intention to extend the control over a decade, with the representative of PASOK-KINAL underlining that “as we are specific, we want every parliamentary group with its own request to do the same. If they have corresponding tangible evidence, let them submit it, the Parliament is open”.

“If, for example, ND’s KO comes and tells us that while Mr. Tsipras was prime minister in the previous period there were similar practices or that we have to go even further back to the period when Mr. Samaras was prime minister and the EYP was under the political supervision of Mr. Dendias and Mr. Kikilia, and there are tangible proofs for this, we are here to discuss it, always in favor of Democracy and transparency”, added Mr. Manzos. Charilaou Trikoupi in any case focuses on the case of Nikos Androulakis, which as they emphasize is very serious, affects the Republic and concerns all citizens.

The attitude of SYRIZA

THE SYRIZA is expected to say “no” to the “historical review” attempted by the government majority on the case of surveillance, considering that there are specific things that need to be investigated and are related to attachments, whether a legal mantle can be put on illegal and unconstitutional actions, who is the reason why they happened, if the EYP has leased the Predator from a private person, as well as who are the other politicians who were allegedly monitored in the period 2020-2022.

The strategy that his party will follow Alexis Tsipras will be finalized this morning, when the Executive Office of SYRIZA meets (10.00 am) under the president of the party. The executives participating in the body (Svigou, Vassiliadis, Iliopoulos, Gerovasilis, Ahtsioglou, Xenogiannakopoulos and Douros) together with Alexis Tsipras will discuss all the latest developments and the “line” that the official opposition will follow.

However, Koumoundourou has already sent her “messages” stressing that there is a specific fact “and this must be investigated”, party executives emphasize while adding that only “if something arises in the course of the investigation for another period, then of course this should be discussed and be investigated. But here we have a scandal that the prime minister himself admitted and we’re going to be talking about 2012?” he wondered meaningfully.
