Anastasiades: “We did not accept, will not and must not submit to a two-state solution”

Nikos Anastasiadis assured that the highest priority throughout his political career, which remains a life goal, is the solution of the Cyprus problem through the peaceful path

We have not, will not, and must not submit to a two-state solution. And it depends on us whether we will give the opportunity to some to support something similar, said the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, adding that accepting a similar solution also means opening “Pandora’s box”, because in this way many European and not only states will face similar challenges and problems. Therefore, noted President Anastasiades, it depends on us, if we stick to the positions of principle as determined by the UN resolutions, the principles and values of the EU, the time of vindication cannot but come.

In his memorial speech, at the national memorial of the hero Michalakis Paridis, in Anafotia, Mr. Anastasiadis assured that the highest priority throughout his political career and remains the goal of his life, is the solution of the Cyprus problem through the peaceful path and the end of unacceptable holding state. And he pointed out:

“This desire to find a peaceful solution has always been based on the principles and values of international law, the EU, the UN resolutions that expressed the will of the vast majority of states for justice to prevail in Cyprus, for the occupation troops to withdraw, to end the anachronistic guarantee system.

The aim was to preserve and protect our Turkish Cypriot compatriots, without, however, ignoring the dangers for the Greek Cypriots through the claims put forward by the Turks.

We have exhausted all room for flexibility. However, we could not accept that Cyprus continue to be under the guarantees of Turkey, to be under the influence of Turkey, to be essentially controlled, but also for the intended solution to lead us to a new Bosnia and Herzegovina or a new Lebanon, i.e. a fatal solution which would lead to the dissolution of the state, to the division of our homeland, as was and remains Turkey’s goal since 1950.

What we owe heroes is not what foreigners dictate or double standards diplomacy.

What we seek is to have a solution that is lasting, that is above all functional, that protects all citizens without exception. Before and above all, let’s not forget that Cyprus is a member state of the EU, controlled for everything, much more so for human rights and therefore Turkey’s reasons that it wants to maintain the guarantees for the protection of the Turkish Cypriots are only refuted by the fact that the EU is present.

Another element that cannot be overlooked is the alteration of the demographic character, it is Turkey’s efforts through the proposals it submitted to essentially control the entire statehood of the Republic of Cyprus. In the name of political equality, they claimed to always have a positive vote for any decision taken by the central state.

You realize that what is called political equality was nothing but political inequality, for, as I have often said, the non-majority community would in effect rule the majority.

We had suggested that we were ready to accept the positive vote. Never; Where and where the potential proposal for a decision might negatively affect the interests of the Turkish Cypriot community. Another proof of the authenticity of our intentions that we never wanted to impose ourselves on the Turkish Cypriots, we never wanted to usurp their rights. On the contrary, what we sought was mutual respect through the provisions. Not only ours against the Turkish Cypriots, but also theirs and Turkey’s against the Greek Cypriots.

How much we were wronged or were wronged is demonstrated by the proposals submitted by Turkey on April 25, 2021 before the UN Secretary General. When officially, now, he claimed the solution on the basis of two states. For the first time, he officially raised the request for the partition of Cyprus”.
