Mikhail Gorbachev “tried to change a system that had exceeded its limits, disintegrated by its weaknesses,” says Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a series of tweets on the death of the last leader of the Soviet Union.

The Prime Minister accompanies the tweets with a photo of himself at a young age with Gorbachev.

Mr. Mitsotakis writes: “Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, passed away in a country and a continent very different from those of his own time. He tried to change a system that had gone beyond its limits, broken by its own weaknesses.

As a politician, he was identified with the terms “reconstruction” and “transparency”, which, however, did not bear fruit in his country. However, he developed into a person with a decisive contribution to peace, international understanding and democratization.

Values, which today are severely tested in the lands of his old homeland. May his faith in them remain his greatest legacy.”
