Fury at Turkey over EU support – ‘You’re spoiling Greece for challenging us’

by

The representative of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs even gave lessons on the acquis communautaire in the EU, saying that the unquestionable support of Brussels in Athens “is against both the acquis communautaire and international law”.

The statement of the representative of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tanzu Bilgic, echoes the annoyance of Ankara for the clear European support to Greece against the Turkish challenges.

On the one hand, he tried to downplay the importance of the new statements of support from the Commission and the Czech Republic, and on the other hand, he accused the EU of being indifferent to the… Greek challenges and of “spoiling” Athens.

“The statements of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in the capacity of the President-in-Office of the EU and some other EU institutions regarding our country have no meaning and value for us,” Bilgic said, as reported by the SKAI correspondent in Constantinople Manolis Kostidis. He added that if the Czech Presidency wants to advance the dialogue “they should effectively get rid of the abuse of the narrow-minded Greek Cypriot veto, which undermines EU solidarity and common interests.”

The Turkish official even gave lessons on … the acquis communautaire in the EU, saying that the unquestionable support of Brussels in Athens, “is against both the acquis communautaire and international law”. He spoke again about “spoilt” Greece with maximalist demands and repeats the lies about harassment, violations and provocative actions from our own country.

“The EU’s unquestioning support for Greece in the Aegean and Mediterranean disputes on grounds of solidarity is against both the EU acquis and international law. This attitude, which spoils Greece, encourages non-solution, not solution, and supports Greece’s pursuit of maximalist demands. It is surprising that those who made these statements ignore the violations, harassment and threats, the provocative actions of Greece against our country and remain indifferent to the actions and practices that go against international law,” said the representative of the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

Finally, he reiterated that Ankara “will continue to resolutely protect its legal rights and interests in the Aegean and the Mediterranean”.
