Giatromanolakis: “The return to LGBTQI + individuals of their rights is a condition for equality”

The Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports in charge of Contemporary Culture Nikolas Giatromanolakis participated today in the event of the Ministry of Justice “Society without Racism, Society with a Future” to combat discrimination based on sexual orientation – identity and gender expression.

In his presentation, Nikolas Giatromanolakis referred to the role of the State in the fight against racism and intolerance, starting with the axiom that LGBTQI + rights are human rights and that the return to LGBTQI + individuals of their rights is a condition for equal

More specifically, he referred to three tools: increasing the visibility of the different identities of the citizens of a country, the positive policies and more specifically horizontal strategies that concern all the Ministries, as well as the change of mentality and the breaking of stereotypes, something that is achieved through education system and through training programs for public officials. The Undersecretary stated that the National Strategy for Equality of LGBTQI + is a comprehensive plan which develops a network of actions for all areas of public life.

During his appointment on the occasion of the appointment of himself as Deputy Minister, the first openly LGBTQI + person in such an office, he stressed that the political life of the country should become more inclusive and representative, to reflect the real Greece.

He also referred to the role of the Ministry of Culture in the promotion of LGBTQI + rights and their inclusion in the public sphere.

Closing his position, he characteristically stated that on the occasion of publications of the last days, the freedom of expression, art and speech are completely non-negotiable principles.

The event was part of the project “Developing a comprehensive strategy against racism, intolerance and hate crimes”, which is co-funded by the European Union’s Rights, Equality and Citizenship 2014-2020 program and implemented by the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with the Greek Parliament and the Center for Political Research of Panteion University.

The event was also attended by the Secretary General of Justice and Human Rights, Mr. Panos Alexandris, the Chief Financial Advisor to the Prime Minister, Mr. Alexis Patelis, the actor and screenwriter, Mr. George Kapoutzidis, and the Appellate Court, Athens.
