Mitsotakis to the European People’s Party: “Europe is facing a geopolitical earthquake today”

“The KO of the EPP chose Crete for this very important meeting. We have many big issues to discuss and the challenges facing, not only our political family, but the European family as a whole,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis in joint statements with ELK President Malfred Weber after the private meeting they had in Heraklion, Crete.

The Prime Minister mentioned that this meeting was scheduled to take place last year but was postponed due to the earthquake. “Europe is facing a geopolitical earthquake today. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is causing tragic consequences for the stability of our continent, for Ukraine. It causes effects on our energy security, rising prices and an energy crisis which has been caused by the blackmail of Russia using its natural gas as a weapon”, continued Mr. Mitsotakis.

“We will have the opportunity to discuss these and map the path of our common European response to support citizens, small and medium-sized businesses, farmers. These are social groups very close to the heart of the EPP that are currently being tested more by the outbreak of imported inflation”, Mr. Mitsotakis continued.

He also said that they have the opportunity to discuss what we have achieved in Greece in these three years since the Greek people gave him the responsibility of governance. “The ND is showing unprecedented political endurance because we managed the crises effectively and consistently in our pre-election commitments. We reduced taxes, strengthened defense and social cohesion,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

At the same time, he added that as we enter new electoral cycles in Greece and Europe, this agenda is important for societies. “I think the next election cycles will be good. The ND always provides the support that the EPP expects from the first political force in Greece, from one of the strongest parties at the European level in the space of the European center-right”, he underlined.

“The EPP is the biggest political family in Europe. It is a big event for us that we are in Greece, in Crete”, emphasized the president of the EPP who praised the successful course of Greece which left the crisis behind.
