As the president of SYRIZA-PS pointed out, the EU cannot limit itself to statements against the escalating Turkish aggression
With the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Joseph Borel, met today Alexis Tsipras, on the sidelines of the preparatory meeting of the Eurosocialists in Prague, according to SYRIZA-PS sources.
According to the said sources, during the meeting, the president of the party emphasized that the EU cannot limit itself to statements against the escalating Turkish aggression (like the recent Libya deal) but must immediately adopt a package of sanctions based on the 2019 framework, which will be triggered if Turkey violates Greece’s sovereignty and sovereign rights. He also said that Greece, for its part, will take its decisions on the extension of its territorial waters in the Eastern Mediterranean and that the EU should to pressure Turkey to return to the path of diplomacy with Greece, on the basis of a new framework of Euro-Turkish relations.
He added that Europe, which has rightly welcomed more than 5 million Ukrainians, cannot watch people die in the Aegean and let Greece shoulder the European, legal and operational responsibilities, stressing that there must be a fair Migration and Asylum Pact, pressure on Turkey to keep its commitments and not instrumentalize the refugee, as well as a brave resettlement program towards the EU.
Finally, he emphasized the need for the EU to submit a plan for peace and to end the Russian invasion and develop a meaningful policy of strategic autonomy. He added that the European Political Community is a positive initiative, but the crucial thing is to promote the accession perspective of the Western Balkans and that the same European perspective is also needed for Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, in which it must be made clear that there are no margins for joining NATO.
