The French president expressed his “concern” about the situation in the Aegean and “called for the resumption of dialogue between the sides to avoid escalation”
The French president asked for respect for international law Emmanuel Macron from his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with whom he met today in Prague, on the sidelines of the first session of the European Political Community.
The French president expressed his “concern” about the situation in the Aegean and “called for the resumption of dialogue between the sides in order to avoid escalation and preserve respect for international law”, as stated in the statement issued by the Elysee Palace.
Macron also insisted that it is necessary for countries to fight so that sanctions against Russia are not circumvented. “He underlined the importance of the European sanctions regime in order to put an end to the escalation (on behalf of Russia) and asked to fight against any strategic circumvention of them,” the statement said.
Turkey, which is heavily dependent on Russian gas and oil, refuses to implement the sanctions imposed by the West on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, constantly opposing its mediation between Moscow and Kiev. The country, a preferred destination for Russians, has seen thousands arrive on its soil since the start of the war – tourists, refugees and businessmen, who have become the biggest buyers of real estate in Turkey since May.
