Hardalias at the State Department: He referred to the Turkish provocation and the Turkish-Libyan memorandum

Meeting of the Deputy Minister of Defense with the US Deputy Secretary of State Derek Hogan – Alexandroupoli, Souda and Athens-Washington defense cooperation on the agenda

The long and strong historical, political and cultural ties between Greece and the USA, which stem from their Western heritage, as well as the excellent level of relations which is a milestone for further deepening of bilateral cooperation in multiple fields were the focus of yesterday’s meeting of Deputy Minister of National Defense Nikos Hardalias with the US Deputy Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Dereck J. Hogan, at the State Department.

As announced, Mr N. Hardalias and D. Hogan underlined the close alliance and partnership between Greece and the USA within the framework of NATO and international organizations.

They discussed issues of mutual interest with a focus on strengthening the close military cooperation between Greece and the US while emphasis was placed on the use of the infrastructures of Souda, Alexandroupoli, Larissa and Stefanovikei for the support of the Armed Forces of the US and the Alliance as well as the strategic value of port of Alexandroupoli which has not only proved critical in providing support to NATO, following the Russian invasion of Ukrainebut emerged as a key regional energy hub for the Balkans, reducing their dependence on Russian natural gas.

In addition, they referred to the current situation and security challenges faced by Greece due to revisionist trends developing in the Eastern Mediterranean region, the developments in Libya and the issue of the illegal new memorandum of cooperation between Turkey and Libya in the field of hydrocarbons as well as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its consequences for regional and global stability.

The Deputy Minister of National Defence, in the context of contacts with Greek nationalityhosted a working dinner for the president of the American Hellenic Institute Nick Lariggakis, with whom they discussed the latest important initiatives of the Institute and thanked him for his excellent cooperation and contribution to the strengthening of the strategic relationship between Greece and the USA.

The lunch was also attended by the Deputy Ambassador of the Greek Embassy in the USA, Theodoros Bizakis, the Defense Attaché of Greece in the USA as well as the Army, Navy and Air Force Attachés of the Greek Embassy in the USA.
