“There are signs of an ever-deepening rift between Turkey and the West as a whole,” comments the Tageszeitung.
At the upcoming meeting of the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Berlin newspaper reports Tageszeitung. And while “Erdogan does not tire of emphasizing that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine must be resolved through diplomatic channels,” as TAZ notes, “with Greece and Cyprus, the Turkish president relies on escalation instead of diplomacy.”
In the dispute over sovereignty and exploitation rights in the Aegean, Erdogan recently threatened to attack the Greek islands off the Turkish coast, the newspaper noted. “Maybe just to show the nationalists in Turkey before the election that he can still be the strong man. But maybe he will try to achieve a triumph.” On the border with Greece, according to TAZ, not only has the conflict between the two neighbors escalated in recent weeks, but there are also signs of a ever deeper rift between Turkey and the West as a whole.
In the dispute between the two countries, the EU now supports the member state Greece and therefore cannot act as a mediator, as the newspaper notes. Meanwhile, the USA, under President Joe Biden, now fully supports Greece. “Athens is being upgraded militarily by Washington and the US military is expanding bases in Greece or creates new ones”.
