Tsipras tour at the 29th Agrotica: “Need to strengthen farmers and breeders”

The need to strengthen farmers and breeders to face the consequences of the energy crisis and manage to survive, without having to give up their jobs in the countryside, he pointed out. the president of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsiprasduring his tour of 29th AGROTICA which takes place at TIF facilities.

In the discussions he had with representatives of cooperatives, producers and sellers of street markets, executives of fertilizer production companies, scientists from universities and research institutes, involved in certification, technology, organic products and other bodies he was informed about a wide range of issues related to primary sector and now exacerbated by the energy crisis. Among other things, they told him that there are farmers and breeders who are thinking of leaving their profession because they see that they will not make it.

Mr. Tsipras arrived at the premises of AGROTICA accompanied by the Head of Agricultural Policy of SYRIZA-PS, Stavros Arachovitis, and was welcomed the president of TIF-Helexpo Tasos Tzikas and the general manager Alexis Tsaxirlis.

Immediately afterwards he went to stand 2 where he visited the stand of the Panhellenic Union of Graduates of Technological Education of Geotechnicians – where they informed him that the problem of the lack of labor for agricultural and livestock production is huge – and the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment of the AUTH.

At the stand of the National Union of Agricultural Cooperatives, he was informed about the problems faced by farmers and cooperatives, while they noted that in addition to the consequences of the energy crisis, there are also those from the climate crisis.

At the stand of the Ministry of Rural Development, scientists working in the ministry’s organizations pointed out that compensations to farmers have increased and Mr. Tsipras observed that at the same time, however, losses have also increased, so producers feel that they are “uncovered” and suggested the change in the regulation regarding the granting of compensations.

The president of SYRIZA-PS met with representatives of the administrations of the Confederation of Producers of Professional Industrial Items of Public Markets of Greece and the Panhellenic Federation of Associations of Agricultural Product Producers and Sellers of Public Markets. The president of the Confederation, Angelos Deretzis, referred to the “explosive”, as he described it, increase in production costs, which producers are unable to cover, and called on the government “to intervene immediately with bolder measures, in order to contain prices”. Mr. Deretzis presented the president of SYRIZA with a Pontic lyre and a key ring with the PAOK logo. “I know that another team is supported, but you have said that you have a special sympathy for the PAOK team,” he told him.

While Mr. Tsipras was at his stand Agricultural University of Athens called the rector Spyros Kintzios, who asked to speak with him. During the short telephone conversation they had, Mr. Tsipras told him that he admires the results of the work of the Agricultural University.

The president of SYRIZA-PS visited the stands of the Department of Agriculture of the International University and the Democritus University of Thrace, where he was informed about ongoing research programs and experiments concerning the primary sector.

At the stand of the Association of Fertilizer Producers and Traders, representatives of production companies informed Mr. Tsipras about the problems arising from price increases and the reduction of use by farmers, precisely because of high prices. Mr. Tsipras also saw an outdoor exhibition of tractors and agricultural machinery.

His tour was attended by SYRIZA-PS MPs Katerina Notopoulou, Christos Giannoulis, Alexandros Triantafyllidis, Dora Augeri, Kyriaki Malama, Angelos Tolkas and party officials.

Afterwards, Mr. Tsipras visited the Panagiotidis Organic Farm, in the Municipality of Volvi, and met with local breeders.
