Demographics is one of the most important issues that concern Greek society. The fertility rate among couples in our country is 1.34 children when the replacement rate is 2.1 children. Neighborhood nannies, child benefits and new parental leave are all part of the government’s holistic plan to tackle the demographic challenge.

Special mention was also made of the campaign of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the General Secretariat of Demographic and Family Policy and Gender Equality with the central message “Sexism hurts society. Face him squarely.” It is an information and awareness campaign for citizens to deal with sexism in the family, school and work environment. The aim of the campaign is to combat the stereotypes that have shaped specific roles for women in society and to create conditions that favor the equal promotion of women and men, ensuring the integration of the perspective of gender equality in all policies.

Deputy Minister Maria Syregela spoke about the incentives given to young people with the important reforms of the Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis and those that will follow in the same direction, who, after thanking ONNED for the invitation, stated: “From the beginning we have been doing bravely steps to achieve substantive equality. Creating opportunities for the economic and social development of every woman is our main priority. In addition, we are implementing a network of horizontal measures to support the family, the harmonization of family and professional life and the essential equality of the sexes, aiming to increase productivity, recover the economy, and increase the standard of living of citizens. Finally, we formed an organized system to protect the victims and punish the perpetrators of gender-based violence. All in all, we don’t stick to words, but we do. And we continue based on the values of Freedom, Democracy, Equality”.

The president of ONNED Orfeas Georgiou stated: “I want to warmly thank Deputy Minister Maria Syregela for her presence and for her continuous support to our Organization. Demographics is a problem that plagues our country and to solve it we need to address the root causes that created it. Solving such a sensitive issue needs constant care and realistic approaches. The Government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself has proven that young people, our prospects and needs are at the top of the Government’s agenda: from how we can get our young people who left abroad to return home, to how we will be able to help young families house their dreams in their own home.”
