The diplomatic vigilance and preparedness of Greek diplomacy and the instantaneous reflexes of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias the provocative effort of Libya’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nyla Mangus, to bring the Greek diplomatic mission, namely the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, before the events and in an extortionate way to extract the acceptance of the Greek side towards the interim government of Libya, seeking a meeting with its Greek counterpart without any prior consultation.

It was the Minister herself – who without any jurisdiction or legalization – as he represents the interim government of Libya whose only role is to lead the country to the elections, just about a month and a half ago he signed an agreement with the Turkish government for exploration and drilling for hydrocarbons attempting to “exploit” the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum, which has been condemned and rejected by the international community.

The position of Athens, however, is clear and encapsulated in the message that “no one will impose on us who we will meet and who we will not meet” and for this reason he accuses the Libyan side of breaching an agreement, since the Minister of Foreign Affairs agreed to go to Tripoli on the condition that he meet only with the President of the Council Mohammed Menfi. “The visit to Libya, as planned, started from Tripoli where I was scheduled to meet with President Menfi. But the minister of foreign affairs of the interim government, Ms. Mangus, she tried to force me with her presence at the airport to meet with her, as a result of which I interrupted the visit to Tripoli, let’s fly to Benghazi where the program was followed” commented Nikos Dendias.

Sources of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spoke of “foul play” and noted that the Libyan authorities thought they could blackmail the situation with this sudden move.

The breach of the agreement by Nyla Mangus, provoked the strong reaction of the president of the Libyan Council, Mohamed Menfi, who had invited Nikos Dendias to Tripoli. “I am unhappy with El Mangus. I had asked her not to go. I had sent my people to welcome Nikos Dendias and she didn’t follow through,” said Mr. Menfi.

However, the fact that the reaction of the interim government of Libya came through Turkey, shows the coordination of the movements of Tripoli – Ankara, insisting on an alliance outside the rules of International Law. In fact, escalating the diplomatic episode, Tripoli chose to recall its chargé d’affaires in Athens, announcing it through the Turkish Anadolu Agency. “The representative of the Government of National Unity of Libya Mohammed Hamude said that in response to the Dendia stand, Greece’s chargé d’affaires in Tripoli was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a decision was made to recall the Libyan chargé d’affaires for consultations,” the report said.

Greek diplomacy, however, insists on not closing the channels of communication with Libya, as it also wishes with Turkey, however without any “discount” and without deviating from the principles that govern the international relations of states in general and the rules of International Law .

Greece wants to hold talks with Libya, the foreign minister clarified Nikos Dendias, concluding his episodic visit to Libya, “but with the government that will emerge from the elections and will represent the real will of the Libyan people,” he stressed. “With this government, Greece will indeed start talks and I believe we will reach a conclusion relatively quickly, because the matter is rather clear”, characteristically noted Mr. Dendias and added that “the caretaker government of Libya has an obligation to fully cooperate, so that to lead the country to quick elections” reminding the lack of jurisdiction of this (interim) government to make any other move that binds the country in the future.
