The “green light” was given to the Presidential Decree for the construction of the Holocaust Museum in Thessaloniki, as announced by the Deputy Minister of the Interior, responsible for Macedonia and Thrace,

“The creation of the Holocaust Museum of Thessaloniki is under way, a debt to which we respond with respect for the past and a sense of responsibility for the future”, emphasizes in his statement the Deputy Minister of the Interior, responsible for Macedonia and Thrace, Stavros Kalafatis, for the approval of the relevant Presidential Decree.

Mr. Kalafatis underlines that another commitment by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and a debt to the Israeli Community of Thessaloniki and to Jews everywhere is in the works and adds: “A project of high symbolism and international scope, which will contribute to the preservation of historical memory of the Holocaust but also in the upgrading of the western entrance of Thessaloniki, entered the next phase” he points out.

“The Presidential Decree on the Holocaust Museum was approved and the government proves, once again, that it speaks with deeds and not with words. This development, for which we collaborated with the Deputy Prime Minister, Panagiotis Pikrammenos, to implement, step by step, a project of high symbolism and international scope, but also with the Deputy Minister of Spatial Planning and Urban Environment Nikolaos Tagaras and the Secretary General of Spatial Planning and Urban Environment Efthimios Bakoyannis, proves our decision to promote, as soon as possible, in collaboration with the Israeli Community in the city of Thessaloniki, one of the largest and most emblematic Holocaust Museums in the entire world. It is a debt to which we respond with respect for the past and a sense of responsibility for the future”, said the Deputy Minister of the Interior, responsible for Macedonia-Thrace issues, Mr. Stavros Kalafatis, after the approval of the Presidential Decree for the Holocaust Museum of Thessaloniki.

The project of the Holocaust Museum is an initiative of the Greek Government, the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Israeli Community of Thessaloniki. The owner of the project will be the NPDD Israeli Community of Thessaloniki, acting on behalf of the Holocaust Museum of Thessaloniki.

From the beginning, the location of the Museum had been agreed to be on the West Side of Thessaloniki and in fact close to the Old Railway Station, given the important historical and associative connection and memory of the Jewish population of Thessaloniki with the railway expeditions and their transport to concentration camps in Poland in 1943.

The Presidential Decree No. FEK 850/D΄/18-11-2022, which amends the older urban planning regime of the area, approves the special urban plan in an area of 3,166 sq.m., owned by GAIAOSE SA, in the area of the Thessaloniki Freight Station of the Municipality of Thessaloniki with the definition of a building block – buildable area, a common area of 3,166 m2, an outdoor parking area of 2,488.52 m2, other common areas with a total area of 2,488.52 m2 and sidewalks, as well as the widening of Koletti Street to weight of the 3,166 sq.m. bus, so that its minimum single width is 21.00 m., as well as the modification of part of the commercial station’s curb line.

In the buildable area, only the special use “Cultural facilities” is allowed (a/a 6, of article 1 of p.s. 59/2018). A five and six meter wide front garden is planned to be built in front of the building block-buildable space.

The building conditions and restrictions of the buildable area are defined as follows:

– Construction Factor: 2.4

– Allowed Coverage: 40% of its surface.

– Maximum permitted height 32 m. (based on Law 3891/2010 and Law 4254/2014 as a special building linked to the history of the railway).

– Front yard: six and five meters

– Compulsory parking according to the P.D. 350/1996 (A’ 230) and par. 5 of article 43 of Law 4801/2021 (A’ 83).”
