Interstate agreement between Greece and Egypt: What it includes – See the maps

by

This is a move that comes to further shield the borders of Greece and in continuation of a series of diplomatic agreements.

Turkey is trying to reach out to Egypt, however, Athens is the one to sign an interstate agreement with Cairo after demarcating an Exclusive Economic Zone.

What is included

  • Determination of Search and Rescue (SAR) limits
  • Identification FIR ie the area where the two countries control the flights and SAR
  • Joint SAR operations joint search and rescue operations

This is a move that comes to further protect the borders of Greece and in continuation of a series of diplomatic agreements such as with:

  • Italy in 2000
  • Malta in 2008
  • Cyprus in 2014
  • And Egypt in 2022

Agreement that nullifies the Turkish narrative

Turkey unilaterally claims Search and Rescue in the Aegean and Southern Mediterranean. Characteristically, in 2020 it tried unilaterally to increase the limits of its own region. In this context, the Greece-Egypt agreement is quite important as it secures the specific area shown on the maps for Greece in the most official way.
