Nikos Androulakis: “To give society confidence again that no one is left behind”

The president of PASOK-KINAL proposed three new measures to deal with the crisis at the event of the Chamber of Commerce and Professionals

“The tripartite ‘economic development, social cohesion and environmental protection’ must form the basis for the new social contract that the country, Europe, and the world need. Entrepreneurship needs from the state clear and equal rules for all entrepreneurs”, said the president of PASOK-KINAL, Nikos Androulakis, at the presentation of the “Sustainable, Innovative and Responsible Entrepreneurship” awards of the Chamber of Commerce and Professionals.

Mr. Androulakis added that the country is tired of client networks, favored interests and constant direct assignments as well as privileged access to financing for only a few. “All this prevents the healthy productive forces of the place from developing their potential and their creativity”, said the president of PASOK-KINAL and emphasized: “In a very difficult moment, in which households and businesses are tested, we must have the necessary political will – and the plan – to fairly distribute the burdens of crises. Let’s give society confidence again that no one is left behind.”

Nikos Androulakis argued that “only in this way will we offer a vision and a realistic perspective to the healthy productive forces of the place, so that they can plan a future with security and optimism”. He pointed out how at a time when labor relations are being tested, the need to protect workers’ rights is more pressing than ever. He noted how the goal is to create an economy that will produce more wealth, better quality wealth that will be more fairly distributed, as social justice is a development condition, in addition to a moral commitment.

Mr. Androulakis pointed out that from April 2022 onwards, the loss of purchasing power of the minimum wage in Greece is around 19%, which undermines the whole cycle of the economy and the viability of small and medium enterprises.

“At the time of the climate crisis, sustainable entrepreneurship is inextricably linked to the fair transition to the green economy and ensuring the country’s energy security,” he said and gave hints on the government’s stance on dealing with the energy crisis. “Since August, we as PASOK – Movement for Change have pointed out that the ministerial decision of Mr. Skrekas, which was hastily passed on the eve of August 15th, deals with the investments in Renewable Energy Sources for the coming years in customer terms, mortgaging the energy future of the country”, underlined Mr. Androulakis.

He explained the position of PASOK-KINAL in the field of dealing with private debt and the increase in borrowing costs, saying that “the previous government opened the door to funds and the current government closed the door to the protection of the first home, as was the case with the law of 2010”.

He repeated the proposals of PASOK-KINAL and three more measures:

1) Regulation of 120 installments for tax-EFKA debt, with incentives for those who comply with the regulation (30% reduction of total debt).

2) Incentives for the green and digital transition, with an emphasis on small and medium entrepreneurship. The Portuguese, for example, created a special financial institution to support small and medium-sized enterprises. Forty-one contracts worth 824 million have been signed in Greece. The Recovery Fund cannot be another missed opportunity. Europe made this mechanism to support those who are in a difficult situation and not those who could borrow anyway, but simply borrow at a lower interest rate.

3) Improvement of the proposed terms of mutual settlement between the bank and the debtor with the largest possible number of installments, in order to take into account the unfavorable economic situation and the consequent lack of liquidity, but also to respect the regulation.
