In a provocative statement issued after the meeting of the National Security Council, Turkey demands the immediate demilitarization of the islands
In the most official way, through the National Security Council which is an institutional body, Turkey asks Greece to immediately demilitarize the Aegean islands.
In a provocative statement issued after the body’s meeting, which lasted four hours under Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey is demanding the immediate demilitarization of the islands, while at the same time accusing Greece of violating international treaties, as broadcast from Istanbul correspondent of SKAI in Istanbul, Manolis Kostidis.
The statement reads: “We expect Greece, which is indifferent to Turkey’s conciliatory and sincere approach and solution-oriented dialogue proposals, to immediately put an end to its activities that violate international law and international agreements, especially militarization of the islands with demilitarized status”.
As noted by Manolis Kostidis, the Turks claim the demilitarization of the islands from Samothraki to Kastelorizo, otherwise they threaten to challenge Greece’s sovereignty over the islands.
Disturbance to military operations
Ankara seems disturbed by the military exercises in Lesvos and Rhodes as well as by the joint exercise with Egypt and sends a message that “the islands must be demilitarized, otherwise Greece’s sovereignty over them will be challenged”
Turkish TV network Haber Global reported: “Greece, after militarizing the demilitarized Aegean islands, is now trying to make a serious provocation. We will remind that Turkey on September 17 made it clear that the sovereignty of these islands can be disputed since they were granted under the condition of demilitarization. But Greece is now starting and carrying out military exercises in Lesvos, Rhodes and Kastellorizo. It is also conducting an exercise with the Egyptian army a few days after President Erdogan’s meeting with Sisi.”
And he continued: “Greece is carrying out military exercises on the islands that have demilitarized status. American M-1117 tanks, armored fighting vehicles, attack helicopters, artillery units and other army forces were used in the exercise in Lesvos. At the same time, the Colossus exercise is being conducted in Rhodes. In the exercises in which the special forces will participate, fighters and helicopters will be used.”
Kalin was irritated
The representative of the Turkish presidency, Ibrahim Kalin, was disturbed by the questions of a Swedish journalist and interrupted the interview, accusing the journalist of speaking through the mouth of terrorist organizations.

Specifically, Kalin said: “Your rhetoric is that of the PKK and the FETO organization. This is honest journalism. We have heard these claims too many times. Don’t think we will shy away from such things. This is not honest journalism. Claims that are not valid are presented to them as if they were reality and then you ask me to answer you. These are ridiculous questions. I don’t want to continue. Can we interrupt?’
Meanwhile, in an article by the Turkish Hurriyet newspaper reports that “Greece can’t get enough of buying anti-tank weapons from Israel” and notes that it made a jump in equipment after the Oruc Reis crisis.
