Great mobility ahead of the elections – In New Democracy they consider it very normal and healthy for the two former prime ministers and presidents of the party to maintain open channels of communication

The mobility in the “right apartment building” has been great lately. And the spotlight has fallen on the two former prime ministers. Kostas Karamanlis and Antonis Samaras, whose interventions in any case weigh heavily on the “internal party scale” and beyond. From Anogeia at the end of August, Mr. Karamanlis – who himself had suffered from a surveillance case in 2004 – had rung a “bell” saying that “the invocation of privacy is subordinated to the need to purify public life”. There were upheavals in Piraeus and at that time the opposition had spoken of a “Karamanlis nail” which would not only cause debates in the blue faction, but possibly a rift. His interventions are counted on the fingers of one hand over the last few years. Two dinner dates followed. K. Karamanlis and A. Samaras spoke in Thessaloniki after the speech of Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Vellideo, while last week they were in Kifissia again for dinner. The “menu” in the northern suburbs, in addition to very good meat, included the latest political developments. The information states that it was initiated by Antonis Samaras in return for the Thessaloniki dinner.

Are any messages being broadcast from these closed meetings? At New Democracy they are not worried, and consider it very normal and healthy for the two former prime ministers and party presidents to maintain open channels of communication. The next meeting will take place in Pallas next Wednesday. Antonis Samaras with his speech will mark the opening of the institution that will bear his name. Costas Karamanlis is expected to attend, as is the prime minister who will have just returned from his trip to Albania. Mr. Samaras, despite the fact that his name was found on the list of politicians allegedly under surveillance by Predator, has chosen not to be placed. Will there be any intervention on the matter next Wednesday? From Nicosia to the event of the bar associations of Greece and Cyprus, he had limited himself only to external issues, which he follows very closely. “It is no longer a question of a dialogue between two states that have differences and it is natural for them to discuss them and find them among themselves – or else take them to “arbitration”. Now it’s more like…- let me say it again – “dialogue with a pirate”, trying to extract our consent to grab everything from us. Such consent will never be given by the Greek government. Because no one does a “dialogue” with a pirate”, he had pointed out, maintaining a very harsh attitude towards the neighbors.

The foundation “Antonis Samaras” begins its operation and in the blue camp they see the inauguration and the presence of a number of top executives as an opportunity to extrovert in the middle of an election season. The two former prime ministers are setting the tone and the decisions they will make regarding their participation in the ballots in the next elections will be of interest. The surveillance case caused a “headache” in Piraeus last week. The clarifications given by Kostas Tzavaras, that he chose not to be “present” at the Institutions and Transparency Committee in order not to cause a problem, opened again the discussions in New Democracy regarding the subject of privacy. Olga Kefalogianni finally did not go against the will of the party, despite the objections she has expressed, causing great satisfaction internally. After all, the debate on the EYP bill is coming up next Thursday and the message the ruling faction wants to send is that “the 156 members of the parliamentary group are concrete”.
