“They attempt a dangerous identification with 2008 and the repetition of the sad events” emphasized the Minister of Citizen Protection

The Minister of Citizen Protection, Takis Theodorikakos, accused SYRIZA of an attempt by the official opposition to identify the incident in Thessaloniki with the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos and to have a “repetition of the sad events” of that time in his statements about the shooting of a police officer at of the 16-year-old in Thessaloniki.

“It is being investigated by the Judiciary which, based on our Constitution, is the only competent one to assess the facts and judge the responsibilities. Let’s all respect that. Unfortunately, the official opposition and even Mr. Tsipras himself but also other voices in public life are trying to instrumentalize this painful case for petty party reasons. With inflammatory statements of division, with extreme rhetoric of populism and hatred towards the police and the government. They attempt a dangerous identification with December 2008 and the repetition of the same sad events that happened then. They are in vain. We will not allow it.”

The Minister of Citizen Protection wished the 16-year-old’s family a “speedy recovery” while clarifying that “the law applies to everyone without exception”. “The power of the Republic cannot be disputed by anyone. Our society does not tolerate acts of violence and retaliation anywhere and by anyone. Yesterday’s attacks and injury to police officers must be unanimously condemned by all. We support the Police in carrying out their duties with determination but always strictly within the framework of the law. The law is for everyone without exceptions. I wish the family of the 16-year-old a speedy recovery.”
